Today is both the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick. I wrote about it in my theological substack:
In honor of this special day, the Order of Malta is hosting a mass at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels here in Los Angeles in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. We plan on attending, if Amelia is up to it. I totally forgot about this until my phone notified me last night. It’s last minute, but if you’d like to come, mass starts at 12:30.
Even if you can’t make it, please say a little prayer for us.
The Holy Family And Our Family
While reflecting on the last year and a half of Amelia’s disease, I was also thinking about Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, and what their life must’ve been like.
The last video I have of Amelia before the diagnosis was this one, where she’s trying to learn how to whistle—
It made me wonder who taught Jesus how to whistle? Surely as a public speaker in a time before amplification, he had to whistle for attention once in a while. Was it Mary or Joseph? Or maybe his crazy cousin John?
These were real people with real lives, not so different than our own. Jesus became man as a way to sympathize with humanity. Mary and Joseph were regular parents. That’s why we can hope for their empathy and intercession in times of need.
Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, pray for us.
